The Skylight Café is the latest in a series of projects which has been developed by Crisis to help homeless people rebuild their social and practical skills, join the world of work and boost their confidence and self -esteem. | |
Through the café, which has received £115,000 in capital funding from the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM), homeless people will receive training and hands-on experience in practical, vocational skills in a friendly, dynamic environment.
All the trainees are homeless or formerly homeless people and all the profits from the Café will be returned to Crisis. Under the guidance of an experienced Café manager, the trainees will receive individually structured training leading to recognised qualifications in Food Hygiene, Customer Care and Health and Safety, as well as more specialised skills such as coffee making and the specialist aspects of food preparation.
The café is currently open five days a week (Monday to Friday), serving healthy and nutritious sandwiches, light lunches, cakes and drinks. The café is located at Crisis' headquarters on Commercial Street in East London (see map).
Please pop in and enjoy the atmosphere, take in some of the artwork hanging on the walls produced by Crisis Skylight artists and try the tasty treats on offer.
As well as being an exciting place to meet in the centre of London's vibrant East End, it will be a Café with conscience - providing an example of how people can be helped out of the trap of homelessness.
